    Description

Vintage crushed stone Aztec calendar. This has many different stones all mixed together and then glued in place. It has Malachite and possibly Jade and torquiose. Malachite can come in a deep blue, people and many green shades. There is also an amber and white colored stone. It has a shiny top coating. Inside this plaque are all shades of green. From pale, light green to very deep greens. Purple or deep blue colors. White and beige, amber colors. On the backside of a red felt backing with a hanger. It has a small spot of missing felt and bubbles that feel like glue. Overall good condition. Measures 7" across.
The Aztecs used a sacred calendar known as the tonalpohualli or 'counting of the days'. This went back to great antiquity in Mesoamerica, perhaps to the Olmec civilization of the 1st millennium BCE. It formed a 260-day cycle, in all probability originally based on astronomical observations.
