Fine Condition WESTERWALD Stoneware Mug, BIERKRUG, 1760 - 1780

Description

A small cylindrical German saltglazed stoneware Bierkrug (German word for beer mug, stein, tankard or beer jug) of dark grey fabric with cobalt blue decoration; a tapering neck; the body with a band of incised foliage enclosed by turned blue bands; surmounted by a hinged pewter lid with acorn thumb-lift knop; Westerwald region, Germany, circa 1760 - 1780.
The mug itself is 6 1/8 inches tall with a base diameter of 3 1/2 inches and a rim top diameter of 2 3/4 inches. It held about half a pint of beer or wine. The form is a simple cylinder with fairly sparse decoration, the waist with a panel of blue with sgraffito leaf decoration about 1 1/2 inches wide enclosed by blue colored turning lines. The mug has a nice pewter lid with the initials 'GW' (see photo #8 in the sequence) and an acorn thumb-lift knop.
We are happy to say the condition is fabulous - no chips, no cracks and no restoration. This is an ideal item for either your collection or your dealer inventory of early Westerwald stoneware.  If you win, you will smile when opening the box! Good luck with your bid!
