Original, vintage wall chart poster by Jake Tebbit for Farmers Weekly, “Picture Guide To European Livestock”.  It’s been rolled and in a tube for years, so I’d recommend having it framed to enjoy on the wall.  It’s a very rare poster.  The only other example that I could find of it, besides one reference in a book, is in the collection of the Science Museum Group (SMG).
This is a British poster, but as you can see from the top middle illustration of Aberdeen Angus (or just ‘Angus’ for short), the Ayrshire (best milk / dairy cattle) below that, etc., these animals are very important in the USA and elsewhere.
The term ‘livestock’ refers to animals kept for useful, commercial purposes.  They’re raised in an agricultural setting to produce labor and commodities such as meat, milk, wool, etc.  Sometimes, ‘livestock’ refers only to animals bred for consumption, but other times it’s more broad, such as horses being called ‘livestock’ in the USA.
My question upon acquiring this wall chart poster was “is this an educational poster to teach students about animals, or is this something related to the trade?”.  I came to find out that it’s a trade piece, for people working in the livestock and meat industries.
These people would include farming professionals such as cattle ranchers, dairy farmers, sheep farmers, pig farmers, etc.  If the animals aren’t being used for their milk, wool shearing, etc., the next professionals in the industry would be the abattoir companies and workers in the slaughterhouse business.  In America, the USDA is involved.  But, the abattoirs are part of the meat packing industry.  I think butchers and butcher shops can be part of this or work as the next person(s) in the chain of supplying food to consumers at grocery stores or what have you.
The way that I discovered that this wall chart poster is a trade piece is that I found someone in the past who owned an example of this poster and had it displayed on the wall in his office back in circa 1984.  His name was Richard Jolley.  He was the Deputy Chairman of the Association of British Abattoir Owners, General Manager of British Beef Co. (they or their sites were bought by Kepak Group Unlimited Company in the 1990’s), and a Member of the Worshipful Company of Butchers of the City of London.  I found out this info in the book ‘Being Jewish and Doing Justice: Bringing Argument to Life’ (online).
So, I think that the person who would enjoy this wall chart poster could be anyone in the cattle, sheep and pigs industries, from farmers all the way up to white collar executives like Mr. Jolley.
About the artist (from the net):  Jake Tebbit is a successful illustrator and designer. He studied Graphic Design at Cambridge Art School and Kingston upon Thames School of Art, gaining a BA in Graphic Design. He also has an MA in Children’s Book Illustration from Anglia Ruskin University. His first job was as a background artist for Halas & Batchelor, the British animation company; he then moved on to become Senior Editorial Artist for Reed Publishing before becoming a freelance illustrator in 1977. He has worked for many publishers, including children’s, educational, agricultural and reference books. From 1983 to 2003 he provided the weekly editorial cartoon for Farmers Weekly, the leading agricultural journal of the UK. He has illustrated for the popular BBC Jackanory children’s television series including 101 Dalmatians, The Sheep Pig and other titles. He enjoys the countryside, singing and playing traditional British folk music, drinking cider and wine, and travels when he can.
