    Description

A stunning small saltglazed stoneware tankard with a bulbous body and cylindrical neck; the handle ear-shaped; Germany (Siegburg or Frechen), circa 1550 - 1600.
This fabulous little German stoneware jug is superbly potted with a bulbous body, cylindrical neck and spreading foot. There are simple turning lines at points around the body which provide the perfect aesthetic touch. The jug is a very desirable small size, only 5 1/4 inches tall and holding about half a pint of beer or wine.
The glaze is a mottled dark reddish-brown color which extends to just over half way below the waist. It would be hard to produce a more perfect shape more perfectly decorated than this, a remarkable combination of manual skill and aesthetic restraint that could only be done by a potter who made hundreds of these every day. You won't find a better early example like this in a long time!
The condition is generally excellent but the handle has been broken off and re-attached so the appearance is now very good. There is a worn area on the rim that does not interfere with the appearance (see photo #11).  A wonderful addition to your specialist collection or dealer’s inventory!
