The Liberty Five Cent (or "V Nickel") design was minted in two varieties: without the word CENTS on the reverse, for the first part of 1883, and with the word CENTS on the reverse 1883-1912.
Until 1912, the last year of the series, all V Nickels were minted in Philadelphia.  In 1912, they were minted in Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco.  Philadelphia minted over 26 million coins; Denver minted over 8 million; San Francisco minted only 0.24 million (the lowest mintage of the series).
Because it did not say "Cents", some of the first variety in 1883 were gold plated and passed as 5 dollar gold pieces.  At least some of the swindlers even imitated the reeding of a gold coin, to assist in passing them.
