    Description

I'm not sure anyone knows how or why pattern 1839 belt plates were attached to Civil War cap boxes, but they appear now and then, probably a post-war alteration.  The plate started as an arrow-back small pattern 1839 plate, and when it was affixed on the cap box, the points if the arrow were filed or clipped off, perhaps by Bannerman. surplus dealers.  Please don't ask if the plate has a maker's mark, because it would destroy the box to take it off.   Condition:  generally good, but the inner flap is flaky.  The wool is excellent and the pick is in place. Very attractive looking.
