Description
Original circa 1858-1860’s or so (possibly 1858-1862) 9th plate size (2 1/2 inches by 1 7/8 inches) ambrotype photo of a child. The child holds an early American painted tin toy horse on a four wheeled platform. This cased photo was found in Maine. But, we do not know where it was taken. An exceptionally pleasing image with some red tinting on the child’s cheeks.
We have taken the image out of the case to examine it additionally. There is a piece of loose modern paper in the case identifying the child as “Elias Morten Elmes”. There is a loose piece of black backing paper behind the ambro in the metal frame. The black paper is definitely old. But, probably not the original backing paper.
There are some minor losses of the emulsion of the ambro under the metal matt. The positive point is that on the front the ambro appears as excellent & intact surface-wise with the exception of a minute 1/32 of an inch emulsion loss at bottom right corner at 4 o’clock edge position since the other minor flaws are behind the metal matt.
The original case has a pressed leather covering with a bird & flowers design. The case has a red silk lining in the front. The case is in pleasing condition on the front & back sides showing only minor wear. The case is separated at the hinge. The two ends of the bottom section of the case could be improved with a little bit of careful gluing back of the partially loose edges.
