  • Condition: Latch on case is gone. It does not snap closed. Otherwise, the case and photo are in WONDERFUL condition. Well-preserved! Photo is very dark. Appears to be an ambrotype, but there is a small chance it is a ferrotype. Case copyright 1857. Papers are torn and heavily worn.

    Description

    For bid is an original circa 1857-1858 sixteenth plate portrait of a handsome, brawny man with an Abraham Lincoln haircut and beard!  Man is wearing a tuxedo 1850's suit.  Brass frame reveals an oval shape.  In a so-called "Union Case" by the A. P. Critchlow & Company (Alfred Critchlow of Florence, Massachusetts).  Papers in both halves of the tiny case.  I suppose this was made of some kind of gutta percha or 1850's thermoplastic material.  Case is in very good condition, but the clasp that kept it closed is missing.  No major problems with the brown colored case that I see.  Very nice indeed!  There are some scraps and stains to the two labels in the cases.  Photo itself is dark but still very nice indeed!  Subject of the portrait is very handsome!
